Scams that use the names of companies and agencies — how to spot, verify and report them

Checked 2026-10-12. Every point links to its source. “Reported by customers” marks an anecdote from a forum: a tactic to try, not a fact to quote.

In short

Most scams that use a company's name start with an unexpected contact (a text, call, pop-up, search ad or social media reply) and end with a request to move money in a way that is hard to reverse: a bank transfer, Zelle or another payment app, cryptocurrency, gift cards, a wire or cash. Real banks, utilities, carriers, airlines and tech companies do not ask you to move money to "protect" it, to pay with gift cards or crypto, or to read back a one-time code. Before anyone calls, clicks or pays, get the contact details from the company's own website, the back of the card, a statement or a bill, never from the message, the caller or a search ad. If money already left, call the bank or payment company at once and ask for a reversal or recall, then report to ReportFraud.ftc.gov or IC3.

Let your AI agent handle this

Escalate Anything is a free, open-source MCP server for Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI, Codex and other AI apps. Your agent gets this playbook, keeps a case log with reference numbers and follow-up dates, and drafts each message for you to approve.

1. Set it up (needs uv):

uvx escalate-anything setup

2. Ask your agent:

My problem with [company]: [what happened, with dates and amounts]. Use Escalate Anything to get it resolved.
