Known blockers

  • Cancelling renewal online needs sign-in to the Norton account. us.norton.com and Norton's license agreement pages blocked automated fetches on 2026-10-13, so renewal-price terms are not recorded here.
  • Norton's contact page shows its phone and chat options only in a browser; no Norton phone number is listed here. Do not use "Norton refund" phone numbers from search results or emails; many are scams.
  • Purchases made through an app store, retailer, service provider or other reseller must be cancelled and refunded with that seller.

Official domains

  • securenorton.com

Real links and emails from Norton end in one of these.

Norton will never ask you for

  • "Norton never sends calendar invites related to billing or payment." A calendar event about a Norton subscription or renewal charge is a scam.

    Source: support.norton.com, verified 2026-10-13

  • Norton publishes the sender domains it uses for email, including @norton.com, @mail.norton.com, @email.norton.com, @subscriptions.norton.com, @login.norton.com, @securenorton.com, @nortonlifelock.com and @lifelock.com. An invoice from a Gmail or other unlisted address is not from Norton.

Known scams

  • Fake Norton renewal emails: Norton describes scam emails that contain "a Norton Renewal notice, an attached invoice, and a phone number to call to cancel a pending credit card charge." Norton says not to call numbers in the message and to verify any unexpected charge directly through your Norton account.

    Source: support.norton.com, verified 2026-10-13

  • Fake calendar invitations claim "your subscription is expiring," with urgent renewal notices showing very high charges, fake registration or membership numbers, and often several phone numbers.

    Source: support.norton.com, verified 2026-10-13

  • The FTC says tech support scammers "use the names of well-known companies like Geek Squad, McAfee, and Norton" and send notices that you were charged hundreds of dollars to renew a subscription. If you call, they ask for remote access, send you to a spoofed refund website, then claim they "refunded you too much money" and demand repayment by gift card, wire, crypto or payment app.

Report phishing

  • Forward suspicious Norton emails and calendar invites as an attachment

Norton asks you to forward the message as an attachment, then delete it (and delete a fake calendar event).

    Use for: Fraud or scam

How complaints actually go

Every point links to its source. “Reported by customers” marks an anecdote from a forum: a tactic to try, not a fact to quote. Checked 2026-10-13. Markdown: dossiers/norton.md

In short

Turn off automatic renewal yourself in the My Norton account (My Account > My Subscriptions > Cancel Renewal) before the billing date, and keep the confirmation email. Norton refunds an annual plan, and each annual renewal, in full if you ask within 60 days of the charge; a new monthly plan within 14 days. Purchases billed by an app store, retailer or other reseller follow that seller's terms. Many "Norton renewal invoice" emails with a phone number to call are scams: check your real account and statements, and never call the number in the message.

How complaints actually go

  • Norton's refund policy says to "Contact us to submit a request"; requests are "typically processed within a few days," and refunds go back to the payment method used for the charge. Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • Turning off renewal is self-service in the account; after you cancel renewal, "Your subscription will continue through the end of your already paid period." Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • Norton's contact page loads its phone and chat options in the browser; automated fetches on 2026-10-13 saw no published phone number, so get the number from inside the account or support site, not from search results or emails. Norton Support contact page
  • Marolda v. Symantec Corp. (filed 2008) alleged that Norton's automatic renewal program did not disclose that customers who bought an upgrade had to cancel the renewal of their earlier product. Symantec denied wrongdoing and settled: class members could claim a $10 cash refund or a two-month subscription extension for purchases from October 1, 2005 to May 23, 2012, with a claim deadline of May 6, 2013. The source does not state the final approval date. Top Class Actions, October 29, 2012
  • LifeLock agreed on December 17, 2015 to pay $100 million to settle FTC charges that it violated a 2010 FTC order (data security and advertising claims, not auto-renewal); the FTC filed the stipulated order in federal court in Arizona. FTC press release, December 17, 2015 LifeLock is now a Gen Digital brand sold as "LifeLock by Norton." BBB: Gen Digital Inc.
  • Gen Digital, Norton's parent, lists Avast among its consumer brands. Gen Digital
  • The FTC finalized an order on June 27, 2024 requiring Avast to pay $16.5 million and banning it from selling or licensing web browsing data for advertising. The case is about browsing data, not renewals, and the FTC press release does not name Gen Digital or Norton. FTC press release, June 27, 2024
  • Avast refunds are closed: the claims deadline was June 5, 2025, payments went out from December 2025 with a second round of 91,093 payments totaling more than $1.5 million, and the FTC says it is no longer accepting claims. FTC: Avast settlement refunds

What tends to work

  • Cancel renewal online before the billing date, check the account again after 24 hours, and keep the confirmation email (it can take 24 to 48 hours). Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • Ask for a refund inside the window: annual purchases and "Each subsequent annual charge" within 60 days; a new monthly plan within 14 days; for a trial that needed a payment method, the first charge within 14 days (monthly) or 60 days (annual). Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • Have the order number, product serial number or product key ready when you submit the refund request. Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • If Norton keeps charging after you cancelled, the FTC advises a chargeback with your card company, a follow-up letter by certified mail, and a report to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and your state attorney general. Online renewals are covered by ROSCA (rule rosca-negative-option), and California's Automatic Renewal Law (rule ca-automatic-renewal-law) applies to California consumers. FTC: free trials, auto-renewals and subscriptions

Traps and fine print

  • "Subsequent monthly charges are not eligible for a refund." Only the first monthly charge has the 14-day window. Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • Purchases made, renewed or billed through an app store, service provider, reseller or retailer are excluded; "different cancellation and refund terms may apply." Bundles with third-party products, complimentary items and repeat purchases already refunded are also excluded. Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • After a refund, "you must uninstall and delete all copies of the software from your device(s)." Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy
  • Norton's US refund policy page does not state the renewal price or how far ahead Norton warns you of a renewal; check the renewal amount in the account before the billing date. Norton Cancellation and Refund Policy

By the numbers

  • BBB lists Gen Digital Inc. (Tempe, Arizona; brands named include Norton and LifeLock by Norton) as an accredited business since March 4, 2021 with an A+ rating, 908 complaints filed in the last 3 years and 212 customer reviews, as of 2026-10-13. BBB: Gen Digital Inc.
