How complaints actually go

Every point links to its source. “Reported by customers” marks an anecdote from a forum: a tactic to try, not a fact to quote. Checked 2026-10-12. Markdown: dossiers/geico.md

In short

GEICO handles auto claims itself, often quickly, but home, renters and condo policies sold by GEICO are with partner insurers that decide those claims. For a total loss, ask the adjuster which state total-loss rules apply and back any disagreement with documents. If a claim stalls or the offer is too low, complain to your state insurance department. GEICO staff never ask for your 2-Step Verification code, and fake GEICO numbers show up in search results: use geico.com or the number on your policy.

How complaints actually go

  • Auto claims: 800-841-3000. GEICO says a claim may be settled in as little as 48 hours, and a drivable car is usually inspected within 24 hours; if the car is not drivable, an adjuster goes to it. GEICO: handling your claim
  • Customer service: 800-207-7847. GEICO: phishing scams
  • Property claims (homeowners, renters, condo, co-op, landlord, wind, earthquake) go to the partner company that holds the policy, such as AIG, Chubb, Liberty Mutual Property, Travelers Property or Assurant; the links lead to sites owned by those companies, not GEICO. GEICO partner claims contacts
  • When GEICO and the customer disagree, the next step is the state insurance department; in Texas, TDI takes complaints and its Help Line is 800-252-3439. TDI: if your insurance isn't paying enough

What tends to work

  • On a total loss, GEICO values the car by mileage, features and modifications, prior damage, and recent sales prices of similar vehicles in your area, and tells customers to ask the adjuster about their state's total-loss rules. If you disagree, back your position with documents such as listings for similar cars, as TDI advises. GEICO total loss process TDI: getting your claim paid
  • You may keep a totaled car; GEICO then adjusts the settlement amount. GEICO total loss process
  • Get repair estimates from more than one shop; in Texas you can use any shop, not only the insurer's list. TDI: getting your claim paid

Traps and fine print

  • If the total-loss settlement is less than your loan, you owe the rest unless gap coverage pays it; for a lease, GEICO pays the lease company directly. GEICO total loss process
  • A car is not officially a total loss until the adjuster confirms it after inspection, and rental days depend on the circumstances of the claim. GEICO total loss process
  • GEICO cannot decide a claim on a home or renters policy written by a partner company; contact that company. GEICO partner claims contacts

By the numbers

  • California auto, GEICO General Insurance Company: 2.0 justified complaints per 100,000 earned exposures in 2025 (68 complaints), 2.0 in 2024 (63) and 1.4 in 2023 (35); GEICO Indemnity: 0.0 in 2025, 4.6 in 2024 and 2.7 in 2023. CDI auto complaint composite

Scams that target customers

  • GEICO employees will never ask for your 2-Step Verification code, and GEICO says it won't text or call unexpectedly asking for sensitive details. GEICO: phishing scams
  • Fake websites and phone numbers appear when people search online for GEICO's contact details; do not give them personal or payment information. GEICO: phishing scams
  • Letters about sweepstakes wins, paid mystery-shopper evaluations or a free car with a year of insurance come with fake checks tied to GEICO; GEICO did not issue them and will not honor them. GEICO: sweepstakes scam

Verification notes

GEICO is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. It writes auto coverage itself. Home, renters, condo, flood, boat and many business policies sold by GEICO are written by partner insurers listed on its partner claims contacts page.
