Collect

Steps

  1. Ask the debt collector in writing for the validation information (creditor name, amount, how to dispute). Keep copies.

CFPB sample letters cover "I do not owe this debt" and "I need more information about this debt".

  2. Dispute the collection account with Equifax online or by mail. Attach proof of payment or proof the debt is not yours.

  3. If the collector or Equifax does not correct it, complain to the CFPB.

Watch out

  • Online disputes, freezes and fraud alerts need a myEquifax account (age 18 or older), which the account holder must create and sign in to.
  • Disputes may need uploaded identity or address documents, such as a driver's license or utility bill.
  • The freeze phone line asks the caller to verify identity, so the account holder must call.
  • A fraud alert needs an active Equifax credit file.
