Collect

Steps

  1. Ask CRI in writing to correct a wrong late-payment entry. Attach proof. You can also dispute directly with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

EmailCustomer service email (also for alternative-format requests such as Braille or large print) CSServices@CRI.studentaid.gov
  2. If the loan is in default, it may no longer be with CRI. Contact the Department of Education's Default Resolution Group (see facts) and ask which office now collects it.

  3. If the reporting is still wrong, complain to the Federal Student Aid Feedback Center, then to the CFPB.

  5. State agency

Your state’s attorney general. Find it in the list of state agencies (also as JSON: states/<code>.json, for example states/ny.json).

Watch out

  • CRI's site (cri.studentaid.gov) loads its content with scripts; plain HTTP fetches return empty pages, so hours and mailing addresses were not confirmed.
  • The phone number differs between CRI's own pages (833-355-4311) and a reported StudentAid.gov listing (888-355-4311).
  • The borrower account needs the borrower's login.

Let your AI agent handle this

Escalate Anything is a free, open-source MCP server for Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Gemini CLI, Codex and other AI apps. Your agent gets this playbook, keeps a case log with reference numbers and follow-up dates, and drafts each message for you to approve.

1. Set it up (needs uv):

uvx escalate-anything setup

2. Ask your agent:

CRI sent a bill I [paid or dispute] to collections. Use Escalate Anything to fix it.
