Steps

  1. Call your bank or credit union at the number on the back of your debit card and report the Zelle payment as a scam. Ask whether it qualifies for impostor-scam reimbursement.

  2. Ask the bank to confirm the claim in writing and give you a claim number.

  3. Report the scam to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov (Zelle links reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/?orgcode=ZELLE), and identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov.

  4. For general questions about fraud or scams on Zelle, call the Zelle fraud and scam line.

PhoneZelle line for questions about fraud or scams +1-844-428-8542
  5. If the bank denies the claim without a clear reason, complain about the bank to the CFPB.

If that fails, escalate

Go up one step at a time. Keep the reference numbers and dates from each contact.

  1. Customer service

The user's bank or credit union that offers Zelle (number on the back of the debit card).

  2. Written complaint

Written error notice to the bank or credit union under its account agreement.

  3. Federal regulator

  4. State agency

Your state’s financial regulator. Find it in the list of state agencies (also as JSON: states/<code>.json, for example states/ny.json).

Watch out

  • Zelle does not take disputes; the claim must be filed by the account holder with their own bank or credit union, usually by phone.
  • Zelle payments cannot be reversed once the recipient is enrolled, so a refund depends on the bank's claim decision.
