Collect

Steps

  1. Check whether the loan was 90 or more days past due at the end of the month that was reported. MOHELA reports delinquency from that point.

  2. If you qualified for an eligible deferment or forbearance when the negative reporting occurred, send an adjustment request with documents through the online account (Upload, Miscellaneous) or by mail.

MOHELA does not grant "goodwill" credit deletions (see facts). You may also dispute directly with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

  3. If the loan is in default, it may no longer be with MOHELA. Contact the Department of Education's Default Resolution Group (see facts) and ask which office now collects it.

  4. If the reporting is still wrong, complain to the Federal Student Aid Feedback Center, then to the CFPB.

Watch out

  • The online account and document upload need the borrower's login.
  • MOHELA's site warns of longer hold times due to high call volume.
  • MOHELA's contact page shows two different international fax numbers (636-787-2790 and 636-787-4038); fax is not listed here.
