## In short

Dispute each wrong item with TransUnion first (online or by mail), keep the confirmation, and also dispute with the lender that reported it. If that fails, a CFPB complaint is the next step: in the 12 months to June 2026 TransUnion closed 45.0% of CFPB complaints with non-monetary relief, such as a correction, and through mid-2025 it took about 40 days on average to answer. Renters should know TransUnion's tenant screening unit was ordered to pay $15 million in 2023 over eviction record accuracy. If your data was in TransUnion's July 2025 breach, use the free monitoring it offers and freeze your credit. Get free reports only at AnnualCreditReport.com.

## How complaints actually go

- A CFPB complaint goes to TransUnion, which has up to 60 days to respond. TransUnion consistently took about 40 days on average from 2022 to mid-2025; in the most recent months the CFPB studied (to June 2025), all three nationwide bureaus averaged more than 50 days. [CFPB FCRA 611(e) report, December 2025](https://files.consumerfinance.gov/f/documents/cfpb_fcra-611e-report_2025-12.pdf)
- About 90% of consumers who complain to the CFPB about a bureau say they disputed with it first; TransUnion's confirmation of a prior dispute rose from about 5% to 30% in 2022 and stayed near 30% through mid-2025. File the dispute with TransUnion first and keep the confirmation before you go to the CFPB. [CFPB FCRA 611(e) report, December 2025](https://files.consumerfinance.gov/f/documents/cfpb_fcra-611e-report_2025-12.pdf)
- The CFPB's 2022 lawsuit against TransUnion and a former executive (filed April 12, 2022) was voluntarily dismissed with prejudice on February 28, 2025; the CFPB's page describes no settlement or payment. ## What tends to work

- A CFPB complaint after a failed dispute: in the 12 months to June 2026, 916,146 of 2,037,349 TransUnion complaints (45.0%) closed with non-monetary relief. [CFPB complaint database search](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/data-research/consumer-complaints/search/api/v1/?company=TRANSUNION%20INTERMEDIATE%20HOLDINGS%2C%20INC.&date_received_min=2025-07-01&date_received_max=2026-06-30&size=0)
- If a freeze or lock request did not take effect, say so in writing with dates. A 2023 CFPB order found TransUnion failed to place or remove freezes and locks on time and told some consumers their requests had succeeded when they had not; it paid $3 million in redress and a $5 million penalty. The order was terminated on November 3, 2025. [CFPB enforcement action](https://www.consumerfinance.gov/enforcement/actions/transunion-trans-union-llc-and-transunion-interactive-inc/)
- Write the complaint yourself and keep it accurate. In 2025 companies returned about 469,800 CFPB complaints as suspected fraud and 63,200 as coming from an unauthorized third party; one nationwide bureau accounted for more than 90% and more than 60% of these returns. The company takes no action on a returned complaint, and it is not published. ## Traps and fine print

- Tenant screening reports: in 2023 the CFPB and FTC found TransUnion Rental Screening Solutions did not follow reasonable procedures for the accuracy of eviction records and did not name the vendors that supplied criminal and eviction records in consumer disclosures. The order required $11 million in redress and a $4 million penalty. - Credit repair companies cannot remove accurate information, and it is illegal for them to charge you before they help you. Anything they can do legally, you can do yourself for little or no cost. [FTC: fixing your credit FAQs](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/fixing-your-credit-faqs)
- Credit reporting complaints to the CFPB in 2025 were 182% above the monthly average of the prior two years; the CFPB links the growth partly to third parties, including credit repair organizations and social media "finfluencers", using the complaint process. - July 28, 2025 breach: names, Social Security numbers and dates of birth of 4,461,511 people were stored in a third-party application that was breached; TransUnion said its core credit database and credit reports were not involved, and offered 24 months of free credit monitoring. ## Scams that target customers

- Fake free-report sites: there is only one authorized place for the free credit reports you are entitled to by law, AnnualCreditReport.com. Other sites pretend to be associated with it, use "free report" in their names, or misspell the address. [FTC: free credit reports](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/free-credit-reports)
- AnnualCreditReport.com and the credit bureaus will not email you asking for your Social Security number or account information; a call from someone claiming to be from a credit bureau is probably a scam. [FTC: free credit reports](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/free-credit-reports)
- Credit repair scams insist you pay before they help, tell you not to contact the credit bureaus, or tell you to dispute accurate information or file a false identity theft report. [FTC: fixing your credit FAQs](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/fixing-your-credit-faqs)
