title: State Farm — how complaints actually go

## In short

State Farm has no dedicated complaint line: work through the assigned claim handler, keep everything in writing, and if a claim is denied, use the denial letter, which must name the policy language it relies on. When a claim stalls or the amount is too low, file a complaint with your state insurance department; in California the department says formal complaints are what let it take enforcement action, and it has charged State Farm General over its 2025 wildfire claims handling. State Farm will not ask for your passwords or for a fee to receive a dividend; forward suspicious emails to abuse@statefarm.com.

## How complaints actually go

- Contact lines: customer care 800-782-8332 (800-STATE-FARM), auto, home and property claims 800-732-5246 (800-SF-CLAIM), a 24/7 line at 800-440-0998, and a "Leave a comment" web form. The contact page lists no dedicated complaint line. [State Farm contact us](https://www.statefarm.com/customer-care/contact-us)
- For a home or property claim, State Farm assigns a claim handler or team. If coverage does not apply, it sends a written letter explaining the specific policy language behind the denial. [State Farm home and property claims](https://www.statefarm.com/claims/home-and-property)
- File a home claim as soon as possible after you find damage; the claims page gives no fixed number of days. [State Farm home and property claims](https://www.statefarm.com/claims/home-and-property)
- The next step is your state insurance department. In California, file at insurance.ca.gov or call (800) 927-4357; the department says formal consumer complaints are required for it to take direct enforcement action. [California Department of Insurance, June 2025](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/0400-news/0102-alerts/2025/Commissioner-Lara-Launches-Investigation.cfm)
- In May 2026 California filed an Accusation and Order to Show Cause against State Farm General after an examination of Los Angeles wildfire claims found 398 violations in 114 of 220 sampled claims, including late investigations, missed deadlines, low offers and repeated adjuster reassignments. Penalties would follow a hearing before an administrative law judge. ## What tends to work

- Answer the denial letter point by point against the policy language it cites, and add your own evidence such as contractor estimates. [State Farm home and property claims](https://www.statefarm.com/claims/home-and-property) [TDI: if your insurance isn't paying enough](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/disagree.html)
- File a formal complaint with the state, not only a phone call: in California 34 of the violations in the State Farm General case came from consumer complaints. [California Department of Insurance, May 2026](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/0400-news/0100-press-releases/2026/release019-2026.cfm)
- For a dispute about the amount of a covered loss, check the policy for appraisal: each side hires an appraiser, an umpire decides differences, and the result binds both sides. [TDI: if your insurance isn't paying enough](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/disagree.html)
- Keep a log of every adjuster and every deadline; California's examiners cited adjuster reassignments ("adjuster roulette") and poor communication as violations. [California Department of Insurance, May 2026](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/0400-news/0100-press-releases/2026/release019-2026.cfm)

## Traps and fine print

- Appraisal costs money: you pay your own appraiser and half of the umpire's costs. [TDI: if your insurance isn't paying enough](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/disagree.html)
- State Farm dividend payments are handled with a partner, Verita, through sfdividend.com; statefarmdividend.com is not a State Farm site, and State Farm will not ask you to pay a fee to receive a dividend. [State Farm security](https://www.statefarm.com/customer-care/privacy-security/security)
