## In short

Planet Fitness lets U.S. members end a membership three ways: online in the member portal, in person at the home club, or by written notice mailed to the home club. The club must receive the request at least 8 days before the next billing date, and at least 8 days before the annual fee date to stop that fee. Commitment memberships owe a buyout fee if ended early. Keep the online confirmation or a certified mail receipt; if drafts continue, call the Corporate Support Line and then dispute them with your bank or card issuer.

## How complaints actually go

- U.S. members can "send written notification via mail to your home club requesting to end your membership, visit your home club in person, or log into your account online through the member portal on the website." [Planet Fitness customer service FAQ](https://www.planetfitness.com/about-planet-fitness/customer-service/)
- Planet Fitness says some policies "may vary by location based on state and local guidelines", so check your own membership agreement and club. [Planet Fitness customer service FAQ](https://www.planetfitness.com/about-planet-fitness/customer-service/)
- The Corporate Support Line for membership inquiries is 603-750-0001 (option 2 for customer service); Planet Fitness says membership questions can also go to your home club directly. [Planet Fitness: contact](https://shop.planetfitness.com/contact/)

## What tends to work

- End the membership in the member portal and save the confirmation, so you do not depend on club hours. [Planet Fitness customer service FAQ](https://www.planetfitness.com/about-planet-fitness/customer-service/)
- If you mail the notice, the FTC suggests certified mail with a return receipt so you have proof of delivery, plus a copy of the letter and notes of any calls. [FTC: free trials, auto-renewals and subscriptions](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/getting-and-out-free-trials-auto-renewals-and-negative-option-subscriptions)
- If a gym keeps billing after you cancel, the FTC says to dispute the charge with your credit or debit card company, because "just changing your credit or debit card number is often not enough." [FTC consumer alert, August 22, 2025](https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2025/08/la-fitness-made-it-difficult-people-cancel-gym-memberships-ftc-says)

## Traps and fine print

- Timing: "The club must receive notice of your request to end your membership at least 8 days before your next billing date, as it may take up to 7 days for billing changes to take effect." [Planet Fitness customer service FAQ](https://www.planetfitness.com/about-planet-fitness/customer-service/)
- The annual fee bills separately: "To stop the billing of the annual fee, your request must be received by the club at least 8 days prior to the annual fee date." [Planet Fitness customer service FAQ](https://www.planetfitness.com/about-planet-fitness/customer-service/)
- The commitment length is the minimum number of months you will be billed; cancel before it ends and "you may be subject to a buyout fee". No Commitment memberships can be cancelled at any time without a fee. [Planet Fitness: memberships](https://www.planetfitness.com/gym-memberships)
- planetfitness.com blocks automated readers and the member portal needs sign-in, so an agent may need the person to read the current page or do the cancellation. [Planet Fitness: memberships](https://www.planetfitness.com/gym-memberships)

## Scams that target customers

- No Planet Fitness page about impersonation scams was found on 2026-10-12. Use only the contacts on Planet Fitness's own sites, such as the Corporate Support Line on shop.planetfitness.com, and check any membership offer with your home club before you pay.
