## In short

LA Fitness says month-to-month memberships can be cancelled at any time through the online account, in person at a club, or by written notice mailed to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619 (it recommends registered or certified mail). Get the notice postmarked at least 5 business days before the next billing date. LA Fitness publishes no customer service phone number. The FTC sued the company in August 2025 over how hard cancellation was; the case is pending.

## How complaints actually go

- LA Fitness says "Most club memberships are month-to-month and may be cancelled at any time" by mailed written notice to P.O. Box 54170, Irvine, CA 92619, in person at a club, or through your online account; depending on your state of enrollment, you may be able to cancel by email. - The Contact Us "Message us" form needs sign-in; replies come from contactus@fitnessintl.com. On 2026-10-12 the page showed "Currently service is unavailable." [LA Fitness: contact us](https://www.lafitness.com/Pages/ContactUs.aspx)
- On August 20, 2025 the FTC sued Fitness International, LLC and Fitness & Sports Clubs, LLC (LA Fitness, Esporta Fitness, City Sports Club, Club Studio) under the FTC Act and ROSCA, seeking an order and money back for consumers. - The FTC filed an amended complaint on January 26, 2026; the FTC case page lists the case as pending and shows no court orders. [FTC case page: LA Fitness](https://www.ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/cases-proceedings/la-fitness)

## What tends to work

- Cancel in the online account and keep the confirmation, or mail a written notice by certified mail and keep the receipt and a copy of the letter. [LA Fitness membership questions](https://www.lafitness.com/Pages/MembershipQuestions.aspx)
- If your mailed notice is postmarked within 5 business days of the billing date and you are billed once more, LA Fitness says it "will refund that additional billing"; ask for it under Account and billing. [LA Fitness membership questions](https://www.lafitness.com/Pages/MembershipQuestions.aspx)
- If drafts continue after cancellation, the FTC says to dispute them with your card company, because "just changing your credit or debit card number is often not enough," and to report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. ## Traps and fine print

- If you cancel before the end of an initial term of three months or more, "a termination fee will apply." [LA Fitness membership questions](https://www.lafitness.com/Pages/MembershipQuestions.aspx)
- The FTC alleges that LA Fitness did not clearly disclose that add-ons such as towel service can be cancelled separately without ending the membership; check each add-on when you cancel. [FTC press release, August 20, 2025](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/08/ftc-sues-la-fitness-making-it-difficult-consumers-cancel-gym-memberships)
- The FTC alleges that members who stopped payments through their bank or card were often rebilled under new account numbers, and that staff were trained to refuse cancellations by phone or email. These are allegations; the court has not ruled. [FTC press release, August 20, 2025](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/08/ftc-sues-la-fitness-making-it-difficult-consumers-cancel-gym-memberships)
- Recurring charges must be paid by electronic funds transfer, advertised rates may change without notice, and a signed membership agreement controls over the website terms. [LA Fitness terms and conditions](https://www.lafitness.com/Pages/TermsAndConditions.aspx)

## By the numbers

- The FTC says the defendants operate more than 600 locations and have over 3.7 million members. [FTC press release, August 20, 2025](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2025/08/ftc-sues-la-fitness-making-it-difficult-consumers-cancel-gym-memberships)

## Scams that target customers

- No LA Fitness page about impersonation scams was found on 2026-10-12. LA Fitness's own contact route is the signed-in Message us form on lafitness.com, and its replies come from contactus@fitnessintl.com; treat other contacts that claim to be LA Fitness with caution.
