title: Allstate — how complaints actually go

## In short

File the claim quickly through the Allstate website, app, an agent or, after a catastrophe, 1-800-54-STORM, and keep your contact and payment details current in MyClaim. Photograph damage and keep receipts before repairs. If the claim stalls or the amount is too low, document your position and complain to your state insurance department; for a dispute about the amount of a covered loss, check the policy for appraisal. After storms, avoid contractors who want payment up front, claim FEMA approval or push you to sign quickly.

## How complaints actually go

- Allstate takes claims through its website, the Allstate mobile app, an Allstate agent or a mobile claim center; its catastrophe claims line is 1-800-54-STORM. Customers update contact and payment details in MyClaim. [Allstate newsroom, October 2024](https://www.allstatenewsroom.com/news/rebuilding-together-allstate-brings-hope-after-hurricane-milton/)
- When the claim or the amount is disputed, the next step is the state insurance department. In Texas, TDI takes complaints and runs a Help Line at 800-252-3439; in California, file at insurance.ca.gov or call (800) 927-4357. - State deadlines apply to Allstate like any insurer. In Texas, for example, the insurer must accept or deny within 15 business days after it has what it needs, unless it extends by 45 days and says why. ## What tends to work

- Photograph damage and separate damaged items before you throw anything away; hire a contractor only for temporary repairs and keep every receipt. [Allstate newsroom, October 2024](https://www.allstatenewsroom.com/news/rebuilding-together-allstate-brings-hope-after-hurricane-milton/)
- Back a disputed amount with documents such as contractor estimates; if the policy has an appraisal clause, each side hires an appraiser and an umpire decides differences. [TDI: if your insurance isn't paying enough](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/disagree.html)

## Traps and fine print

- Appraisal costs money: you pay your own appraiser and half of the umpire's costs, and the umpire's decision binds both sides. [TDI: if your insurance isn't paying enough](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/disagree.html)
- If anyone encourages you to fabricate an insurance claim, Allstate says to report it to your insurer, the police or the National Insurance Crime Bureau at 800-835-6422 (800-TEL-NICB). [Allstate newsroom, October 2024](https://www.allstatenewsroom.com/news/rebuilding-together-allstate-brings-hope-after-hurricane-milton/)
- Never sign your insurance check over to a contractor, and pay the final amount only when the work is done. [FTC: scams after weather emergencies](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-avoid-scams-after-weather-emergencies-and-natural-disasters)

## By the numbers

- California homeowners, Allstate Insurance Company: 2.8 justified complaints per 100,000 earned exposures in 2025 (19 complaints), 4.5 in 2024 (31) and 2.8 in 2023 (20). [CDI homeowners complaint composite](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/120-company/03-concmplt/homecomposite.cfm)
- California auto, Allstate Northbrook Indemnity: 2.6 justified complaints per 100,000 earned exposures in 2025 (39 complaints), 3.0 in 2024 (50) and 2.8 in 2023 (53). [CDI auto complaint composite](https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/120-company/03-concmplt/autocomposite.cfm)

## Scams that target customers

- After disasters, Allstate warns about contractors who claim FEMA or other agency approval, come from out of state, require upfront payment to schedule work, offer unsolicited services, or pressure you to sign quickly. [Allstate newsroom, October 2024](https://www.allstatenewsroom.com/news/rebuilding-together-allstate-brings-hope-after-hurricane-milton/)
- FEMA does not charge application fees; anyone asking for money to help you qualify for FEMA funds is a scammer. [FTC: scams after weather emergencies](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-avoid-scams-after-weather-emergencies-and-natural-disasters)
